"Theoretical basis of Iranian Traditional music"
A Lecture and Demonstration by Master Ali Zarrin
About the Program:
Iranian music has a rich and ancient heritage which has been handed down
from masters to students for generations. Its nuances
and intricacies are as delicate as a Persian miniature; its spirit is that
of the great mystics. This lecture will be a discussion to gain a better
understanding of the history, structure, intervals, performance and musical
instruments. It is mainly based on older documents/research done on this
music rather than western methodologies. Ali Zarrin is the direct
descendant of master musicians Majid Kiani, Parviz Meshkatian and Asghar
Bahari. The Persian Santour is an instrument from which the hammer dulcimer
and Piano are derived. The brilliant sound of Santour comes from light
wooden hammers striking the many strings. Variants of Santour are found
through out the world, including North America (Hammer Dulcimer), China
(Yang qin), Hungary (Cymbalon) among others. This is a unique experience
and introduction to a deeply rooted musical tradition in the Middle East,
particularly Iran.
