An exciting young, emerging Bay Area artist in his first major solo
exhibition, Ala Ebtekar explores the merging of styles from two different
cultural traditions spanning opposite ends of the world and separated
by centuries - Iranian coffee house culture and hip-hop culture.
Seemingly disconnected, both populous traditions are grounded in providing
common space for sharing history, news, and information, reflecting the
lives of people who are often marginalized, and responding critically to
the world. Ebtekar creates an environment where cultures and styles
fuse, providing a visual crossroads where contemporary events meet
mythology.

Opening Reception to the public is on June 16 at 6pm (free)
When: June 16- July 31 Wednesdays through Saturdays from 12pm to 5pm.
Where: Intersection for the Art
446 Valencia (btwn 15/16)
Mission District
San Francisco, CA 94103

On view in our visual arts gallery from June 16 to July 31, Elemental
explores the merging of styles from two different cultural traditions
spanning opposite ends of the world and separated by centuries - Iranian
coffee house culture and hip-hop culture. Gallery admission at
Intersection is FREE. Our gallery hours are: Tuesdays by appointment;
ALA EBTEKAR graduated with a B.F.A. from the San Francisco Art
Institute in 2002. Born in Berkeley, Ebtekar was an active graffiti artist in
the 1990's. He was one of 15 Bay Area youth chosen to work with
internationally acclaimed artist educator Tim Rollins and K.O.S. (Kids of
Survivial) in 1998 on the inaugural exhibition for SOMA's high tech arts
center for youth, Zeum. Ebtekar has exhibited his work with Rollins +
K.O.S. locally at Gallery Paule Anglim, Berkeley Art Museum, ZEUM, de
Young Memorial Art Museum, and nationally at the University of Virginia
Art Museum and White Box Gallery in New York City. He has shown his own
work locally at Gallery Paule Anglim, Oakland Museum of California,
Galeria de la Raza, Gallery 16, The Luggage Store Gallery, San Francisco
Design Center, Asian Resource Center Gallery, and The Annex in New York
City.

Intersection for the Arts is San Francisco’s oldest alternative art
space and presents challenging new works in literature, theater, visual
and interdisciplinary arts. At Intersection experimentation and risk
are still possible, debate and critical inquiry are embraced, and
today’s issues are thrashed about in the heat and immediacy of live art. For

Hi Ala, I'm glad to see that you are both driven and successful in the art world. I remember you were quite a talented artist back at Maybeck when you and I took that intercultural art class and made heratige masks. Remember? Recently I have been looking up people I went to school with just to see how they are doing and I'm glad you're well! Take care and maybe we'll see each other if our H.S EVER has a reuinion. Ala's work is the complete truth and totally inspiring to me.He will rise to great heights because no other iranian painter has captured what it is to be in the east and the west like he has.
