    After Saddam's fall, hundreds of thousands of Iranians rushed to cross the suddenly unguarded border with Iraq to visit the holiest shrines of Shi'ism in Karbala and Najaf. Many traveled without valid papers and others did not hesitate to beg or even lie to get to these sacred sites. Playing with Infidels (Kofar) a portrait of the Godars, gypsies of Indian descent, who are Iran’s forgotten people.

    Gilaneh

    It is the Iranian New Year, 1988. Sadaam is bombing Tehran. And Gilaneh's family is being ripped apart by the war. Her son-in-law is missing after deserting the army. Her charming son, Ishmael, is heading off to fight for his country. Fifteen years later, on the eve of the U.S. invasion of Iraq, Gilaneh is alone in her village home, taking care of Ishmael, now an invalid veteran. This beautifully shot, timely film overflows with unwavering pain, suffering and hope.

    This Israeli documentary examines some of the dreams that were shattered in the aftermath of a horrific suicide bus bombing in 2002, which took the life of a young man whose father, a son of Holocaust survivors, dreamt of a joint Arab-Israeli business venture; the young man himself was in a rock band whose members were all offspring of Israeli military men.

    An Israeli drama with humor set in the customarily closed world of ultra-Orthodox Jews. Moshe and Malli, a married couple, are suffering through a financial crisis and so naturally they pray for help, but instead of a miracle two suspect strangers with criminal pasts appear on their doorstep. The film is reportedly the first made by members of the Israeli ultra-Orthodox community that is aimed at a general audience.

    In 1970, Omar Amiralay made a beautiful short documentary (it opens this program) in praise of the ruling Baath party's project to construct an impressive system of dams. Today, after fatal construction flaws have been found, his controversial new film (it was withdrawn from the Carthage Film Festival) explores the metaphorical implications of that weakness in a beautifully crafted piece of filmmaking.
