Two Decades in Afghanistan
By REZA
Wednesday, February 1, 2006 at 7:30 PM
Washington, D.C.
In 1983, Iranian-born photographer Reza traveled to Afghanistan to document the resistance to the Soviet occupation of that country. In 1992, he was the only photographer to enter Kabul with the late Ahmad Shah Massoud, then a leader of the resistance movement following Soviet evacuation. In later years, Reza made several return visits and gained extraordinary access that allowed him to document the country as few other photographers were able. In 2001, Reza founded Aïna (meaning “mirror”), an organization dedicated to promoting press and cultural freedom in Afghanistan. In recognition of his photographic and humanitarian achievements, last year the French senate honored him with the medal of the French Order of Merit. In this special appearance, a veteran photographer offers an insightful retrospective of his more than two decades of work in Afghanistan, and shares thoughts on the challenging future facing its people.
