(Marmoulak) Iran
A film by Kamal Tabrizi. (Persian with English subtitles. 117 minutes, 2004.)
Critically acclaimed as one of the best films of the last decade, The Lizard, touches a nerve like no Iranian film has done before. This is a compelling tale of a thief who is convicted of armed robbery and sentenced to life in prison. Due to an injury he goes to the hospital where he steals the garb of a cleric and escapes. The movie is a touching story about the things that take place during the course of Marmoulak’s adventures as an imposter, and the important lessons of life that he indirectly instills in all of us.
