Celebrate Norooz, the Persian New Year
Sunday, March 12, 2006
Celebrate Norooz, a joyous festival of new life observed by Persians and the neighboring cultures of the Tajik, Afghan, Uzbek and Kurdish people. Let the Silk Road Dance Company dazzle you with their elaborate costumes, beautiful stories and festive music. Witness the magnificent Haft-Seen Sofreh, the ceremonial table of the Persian New Year. Meet members from the local Persian community who will be on hand to explain Norooz, Haft-Seen and write each child’s name in Farsi! Watch an artist demonstrate the technique of 17th century Persian miniature painting and then visit the installation, Arts of War and Peace: Persian Miniatures from the Collection. Finish off the day by creating Norooz inspired crafts in the Make and Take Workshop and drawing in the Museum’s Persian Galleries during Drawing Together!

Social Dance Classes (Salsa, Latin, wedding dances and Swing) at Tallar by Steven Zaloga. Steven has been a dance instructor, competitor, and performer for over 10 years. Steven has performed at many unique affairs including a Democratic fundraiser, the Austrian Embassy, and Annapolis First Night: and, in 2004, he competed in the Yuletide Ball placing first in all eight American Rhythm dances. The Kennedy Center is proud to host a return performance by the Nava Ensemble, led by Dr. Shahriar Saleh, to celebrate Now Ruz. Guest performers include: Dr. Nader Majd on tar; Dr. Nami Hai on tar; Arsalan Hamidi on violin; and Dr. Naser Khorasani, Dr. Alireza Analouei and the Sama Ensemble.
