A Talk by Dr. Maziar Behrooz, Assistant Professor of History, San Francisco State University
Topic: Perspectives on US-Iran Lack of Relations: What Does America Want from Iran?
This presentation examines the relationship between the US government and the Islamic Republic of Iran and attempts to ascertain what the US want from Iran and which of a number of issues raised by Washington are real and which are not. What, if any, are the hidden agenda and what factors are involved in the development of US policies toward Iran.
Maziar Behrooz is the author of Rebels with a Cause: The Failure of the Left in Iran and numerous articles in Persian and English about Iranian politics. He has appeared as a guest on radio programs including the Persian broadcasting of BBC and Radio SBS (Australia-Persian).

The 13th Annual International Sufism Symposium

Presentations on THE COMPASSIONATE TRADITION OF ISLAM will highlight The International Sufism Symposium at the Hilton Hotel, 300 Almaden Blvd., San Jose, Friday through Sunday, May 5 - 7.
The weekend will include a Sufi psychology panel presentation on Friday afternoon at 3, Whirling Dervishes, workshops and lectures on Saturday and Sunday with Muslim Sufi scholars and practitioners from around the world. A Saturday evening prayer gathering will include Sufi zekr. Taneen Sufi Music Ensemble will present an interfaith concert with Ya Elah, Jewish Music Ensemble, as part of the festivities on Friday, April 29 at 8 pm.
This multi-cultural celebration is sponsored by the International Association of Sufism, headquartered in Novato. The weekend is open to the public with registration available for one, two or three days. Discounts are available for students and seniors. The Hilton San Jose hotel is accessible from freeway 101, 280 and highway 87. Located at the corner of San Carlos and Almaden Boulevard, connected to the McEnery Convention Center. From SF: Take Highway 101 South, take Guadalupe Expressway south to the Park Ave./San Carlos Exit, Left on Park Ave., Right on to Alamden Blvd. Go one block and the Hilton Hotel is on the Left. OR from Oakland: I-880 going South take I-280 South. Exit Almaden/Vine and turn left at the light. The hotel is located on the right handside 2 and 1/2 blocks on Almaden Blvd.
