Firoozeh Khazrai Memorial Concert
New Jersey Sunday - June 11, 2006 05:00 PM
June 11 Memorial Concert to Feature Classical Music by Iranian Composers
Princeton University’s department of Near Eastern Studies is sponsoring a memorial concert on Sunday June 11, 2006, at the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Princeton, to celebrate the life and career of the Persian language teacher, musicologist, and Iranian-studies scholar Firoozeh Khazrai, who died last year at the age of 46. The concert will feature the music of contemporary Iranian-born composers Farid Omran, Reza Najfar, and Kambiz Taghavi.
Mr. Najfar, a prominent flautist and graduate of the Academy of Music in Vienna, Austria, will be on hand to give the premiere of his work Elegie pour une amie, which was written for the occasion, as well as his sonata La persienne for flute and piano. His long-time collaborator, Erich Faltermeier, who is a professor at the Folkwang Music Academy at Essen, Germany, will accompany Mr. Najfar on the piano.
Also performing at the concert will be Firoozeh Khazrai’s 13-year-old son, violinist Farshad Tahvildar-Zadeh, who will perform Farid Omran’s Rhapsody for Violin and Piano, together with the award-winning accompanist Larissa Korkina on the piano. In addition to accompanying Farshad, Ms. Korkina will also give the U.S. premiere of the solo piano piece Nocturne in Esfahan by the Iranian-born Canadian composer Kambiz Taghavi.
Concluding the concert will be the Quartet-Suite for Strings, by Farid Omran, featuring the Stretto Youth Chamber Orchestra of Princeton, under the direction of its celebrated conductor, Ms. Sherri Anderson. The performance begins at 5 pm. The Unitarian church is located at 50 Cherry Hill Road in Princeton. The concert is free and open to the public.
