LACE (LOS ANGELES CONTEMPORARY EXHIBITIONS)
6522 Hollywood Boulevard, LA CA 90028
www.welcometolace.org < http://www.welcometolace.org>
Right; Rite; Write Piece is based on the attempt to claim imposed language and create something which gives agency to those who speak, write or listen to it. Many who communicate in "informal" English at home or with loved ones understand the shift and sometimes block that occurs when in a dominant context that uses "formal" English such as institutions and in printed documentation. In the piece, Amitis will claim a language which she considers "unnatural" by telling the story of her learning English by writing in almost a purge. While she is writing, she will allow the audience to pick up permanent markers and write on her clothes, her body and even her scroll telling her story. She will remain passive to the audience until the end of the performance.
This event is a part of The ReCut Project (2006), conceived and directed by Ming-Yuen S. Ma, with weekly interpretations of Yoko Ono's Cut Piece (1964) every Friday.
*These events are part of Draw A Line And Follow It, a group show featuring LA-based artists who participated in an improvisational process based on the Fluxus practices of the 60s and 70s, currently on view at LACE through 20 August 2006.
