Iran So Far Away
By Nirmala Nataraj
It's little secret that our troubles in the Middle East are as much a failure of cultural empathy as political savvy — because of that, Taravat Talepasand's new exhibit "seeya and sefeed" may be the most important art show you see this season. Though she was born in the United States, Talepasand's family retained their Iranian roots, and when the San Francisco Art Institute graduate began to cement her aesthetic she chose to blend these two backgrounds. Her training in the Persian discipline of miniature painting ensured that her work was immensely detailed, while her Western perspective on gender issues meant that her renditions of Islamic iconography would be imbued with sacreligious though deeply personal opinions. It's all about confronting and smashing taboos, and her work tackles the West's perception of Iranian society, as well as addresses the boundaries of Middle Eastern society. The result is a body of work more haunting than polemic, as Talepasand's heroines transcend the soft gray atmospheres in which they're embedded to retain a deep-rooted personal beauty. The exhibit continues through June 2 (an opening reception starts at 5:30 p.m. on May 3.)
Date/Time: Daily from Fri., May 4 until Sat., June 2
