Explaining Poetry Events
The objective:
Our goal is to study Iran's history and understand its culture through poetry. We examine poems line by line and look for hidden sociological messages.
For that, we read poems of Iranian current poets. People are encouraged to bring the poems they find interesting to discuss with others. It was brought to our attention that there are many great poets currently writing in Iran. We will be reading some of those poems. Also, poems of modern poets like Forough Farokhzad, Sohrab Sepehri, ... Will be read.
In Addition to that, since no person, and for that no culture can be understood without understanding its past, we will continue reading Shahnameh (The Epic of The Kings) , to unfold and unveil the mystery of Iran's previous generations who kept our culture alive despite all the misfortunes and hardships.
The format:
We believe in the power of the group. The meeting is directed with the help of all the attendees. We like to hear everyone's ideas and points of view. Everybody takes turn in reading a few lines of any poem and talking about the message and the meaning of those lines. There are always passionate and controversial, but very friendly conversations, that open our eyes to the new horizons and help us understand the material better. What makes the Poetry Night special is the people who attend it!
The material:
For more current poems, people can bring the poems that they like. Please feel free to bring the very current poems that you discover online, or the controversial poems from some modern poets like Forough, Sohrab, ... To share with others.
For Shahnameh, the pages to be covered in each event is assigned every week. People are asked to print the assigned pages from the provided link and bring them to the meetup location.
The regularity:
The Poetry Night meetup meets once a month on a Sunday afternoon.
We are planning to hold some Poetry meetup events in the form of a picnic on some weekends. Those meetups are not regular, but we can hold more of them if people show interest.
The location:
We have been meeting at Cafe Borrone which is a very hip and interesting coffee shop and restaurant in downtown Menlo Park. The location is chosen half way between San Francisco and San Jose to facilitate people's commute from different locations. Also, Café Borrone is big and casual and can hold groups
