Dear Friends:

As some of you may know, every year around April, California poppies bloom, with the highest concentration around the Lancaster area.

This year is a particularly good year with an unusually dense blooming of our California State flower due to some of the late rains that we’ve had.

The California Poppy Reserve and its vicinity in Antelope Valley are a spectacular setting for a hike and picnic.

Every year I organize a hike to the area with the Harvard Alumni Association. I organized one a few weeks and have decided to go back for another round of photos.

You and your family members and friends are welcome to join me on this trip to Antelope Valley for a hike and picnic in one of the most beautiful natural settings in California. Photographers from around the world fly to California in April to take pictures of Antelope Valley during April. The place we’re going to is so nice that it made it to the front page of the Sunday LA Times last weekend as the get-away destination of choice for Los Angeles residents who like the outdoors. I’m expecting a lot of people to be going this weekend as the bloom is still in its peak.

Event: Wildflower Hike and Picnic in Antelope Valley, California (approximately 1 hour north of LA)

Date: Sunday, April 27th.

Meeting Time for Carpooling: 9:45 AM

Meeting Place for Carpooling: Parking Lot of the Balboa Sports Center in Encino. From the 101 take the Balboa Blvd Exit in Encino. Turn North. (If traveling Northbound on the 101, North onto Balboa is a Right turn. If traveling Southbound on the 101, North onto Balboa is a Left turn.)

After turning North onto Balboa Blvd., make an immediate left turn on to the first street called Burbank Blvd. On your right hand side on Burbank Blvd., you will notice a park with a lot of tennis courts. Park in the parking lot adjacent to the tennis courts. I will be waiting there from 9:30-9:45AM.

Itinerary: We will drive 1 hour north of LA to the Poppy Reserve, visit and hike in the reserve for one hour. The hike is very easy and flat. We will then go to where professional photographers go to picnic, which is outside the reserve and a place I like to go to every year. We should be back in the LA area by around 4pm or possibly earlier.

What to bring: Some food / drinks / snacks for our picnic for yourself and some to share with others. Sunscreen. hat + a jacket if it gets cold. Some bottled water. Your camera and a bright smile.

Please feel free to invite family members and friends to come. It should be a great hike and a wonderful day out in nature.

Please kindly let me know in advance if you will be coming and how many people will be coming with you.

Regards,
