“Shajarian is a superstar, the Pavarotti of Persian classical music.”
Toronto Globe & Mail
Persia (modern day Iran) is home to one of the world’s great civilizations, and a unique culture with venerable traditions. One of the most dynamic Persian traditions is Musiqi-e assil, or Persian classical music, which has lately undergone an extraordinary artistic renaissance. In the last twenty years a new generation of artists has emerged to introduce new innovations and push the music forward, even as they preserve and pass on the ancient repertoire.
At the forefront of this movement are the musicians of the Ava Ensemble, and legendary singer Mohammad Reza Shajarian, and his son Homayoun, also an accomplished singer and musician. Shajarian is one of the most recognizable voices in Iran – sweet, soulful and dynamic. He began his recording career in the ‘60s at the age of eighteen and has been a leader of the Persian classical music renaissance that took hold after the 1979 revolution. He has toured with the Masters of Persian Music, which were nominated for a Grammy award in 2003..” In 2006, UNESCO awarded him with their highest tribute, the Mozart Medal.
The Musicians of the Ava Ensemble include Vancouver-based Barbat player (Persian lute) Hossein Behroozinia, as well as 4 other top international artists playing traditional Persian instruments: tar, setar (persian lutes), dombek & daf (persian hand percussion), and kemanche (spike fiddle).
“They were hailed with three standing ovations – one before they’d performed a note”
