An expatriate Afghani currently living in California, Herawi calls himself an amateur musician but is actually a rare performer of the traditional music from the Herat valley in western Afghanistan. Those familiar with author Khaled Hosseini (of Kite-Runner fame) would know that his family came from Herat, where as its geography suggests, the area's music is a blend of Persian and Hindustani instruments and styles. The pieces have the varied rhythms of the Hindustani raga forms, but are fairly short (3 to 5 minutes each). The melodies are based on a 12-tone octave that in recent decades has overtaken the traditional Persian tonal system. Ustad Herawi plays the 14-string dutar, a long-necked lute, and the rebab, a short-necked lute, accompanied by tabla and/or frame drum. Herawi's strength is the energy and spontaneity of his instrumental pieces.

CalArts Creative Music Festival
Los Angeles Saturday - September 20, 2008 08:30 PM
This season's edition of the storied CalArts creative music revue brings one of the most formidable lineups in the festival's history for two nights of boundary smashing creative music. Trumpeter, composer, improviser and festival founder Wadada Leo Smith leads two different ensembles: his Golden Quintet, with Vijay Iyer (piano), John Lindberg (bass), and Pheeroan akLaff and Famoudou Don Moye (drums, percussion), and the Silver Orchestra, which performs with master baritone Thomas Buckner, Vinny Golia (winds), Vicki Ray (piano), Mark Menzies (violin), and Erika Duke-Kirkpatrick (cello). The first night, entitled "Music and the Voice," showcases Smith's Silver Orchestra, as well as the genre-defying pianist, composer and improviser Anthony Davis with his ensemble Episteme, featuring Earl Howard (synthesizer and saxophone), Mark Dresser (bass), J.D. Parran (reeds), and Cynthia Aaronson-Davis (soprano). Completing the first night's program is pianist, organist, gospel singer, composer and improviser Amina Claudine Myers. Myers performs here in a trio with Don Pate (bass) and Reggie Nicholson (drums), and with Paul Berkolds and the CalArts Choir. The second night, entitled "Music and Video," features Smith's Golden Quintet, as well as the Sufi tradition-inspired Lian Ensemble, with Houman Pourmehdi (tonbak, daf, ney, vocals), Mahshid Mirzadeh (santur), Mani Bolouri (kamanche, gheychak, vocals), Amir Koushkani (tar, vocals) and Pirayeh Pourafar (tar, vocals), all set to live video projection by Carole Kim.
