The Congo – Reducing Violence: Practical Approaches
With Lena Slachmuijlder, SFCG Country Director in Democratic Republic of Congo

Lena will highlight Search for Common Ground’s (SFCG) pioneering use of radio and participatory theatre in the Congo, as well as a joint human rights project with Amnesty International USA (AIUSA).
This partnership between SFCG’s & AIUSA’s programs are aimed at reducing violence (including sexual violence) rooted in the local languages and cultures of the Congo and are reaching some of the most war-torn areas. Bring your questions and learn more about this partnership in the Congo, as well as neighboring Burundi and Rwanda.
Banafsheh Akhlaghi of AIUSA and Philip Hellmich of SFCG will be introducing Lena.

Background of Lena Slachmuijlder:
Lena has worked in Africa since graduating from Stanford University in 1990. She has been a professional journalist and musician in Burundi, DRC, Ghana, Rwanda and South Africa. In 2001 Lena joined SFCG as a radio and regional media director in Burundi. She became SFCG’s DRC Country Director in 2005. Lena’s passion for the performing arts is second only to her creativity in helping people find common ground in difficult environments.
