Yo-Yo Ma's Slik Road Ensemble
New York Saturday - June 4, 2011 08:00 PM
YO-YO MA brings
THE SILK ROAD ENSEMBLE –
comprised of internationally renowned musicians and composers
from more than 20 countries – to NJPAC
World premiere of “Vojo”
Saturday, June 4, 2011 at 8pm
Newark, NJ ( – Multiple Grammy®-winning superstar cellist Yo-Yo Ma shepherds his Silk Road Ensemble, comprised of musicians from across the world performing traditional and new compositions inspired by sounds from the “silk road” trade routes, to NJPAC’s Prudential Hall on Saturday, June 4, 2011 at 8pm. The performance will include the world premiere of “Vojo” (“The Way” or “The Road” in Esperanto), a work written by Silk Road Ensemble members exploring the idea of connecting two sides of the world – Galicia (Spain) and Okinawa (Japan) – through a dialogue between the gaita (Galician bagpipes) and shakuhachi (Japanese bamboo flute).
Tickets are $25, $48, $61, $71, $79 and $109 and may be purchased by telephone at 1-888-GO-NJPAC (1-888-466-5722), at the NJPAC Box Office at One Center Street in downtown Newark, or at www.njpac.org.
Yo-Yo Ma established his Silk Road Project in 1998, to encourage deeper understanding of other cultures and beliefs – because, in his own words, “when we enlarge our view of the world, we deepen our understanding of our own lives.” Since that time, he and his colleagues have promoted the study of cultural, artistic and intellectual traditions drawn from the ancient trade routes (the so-called “silk road”) that stretched from the Mediterranean Sea to the Pacific Ocean.
Today, the Silk Road Ensemble includes renowned musicians, composers, arrangers, visual artists, and storytellers from more than 20 countries – a one-of-a-kind world music collective The Boston Globe has called “a kind of roving musical laboratory without walls.” The ensemble’s repertoire includes traditional music as well as newly commissioned works, many of which combine non-Western and Western instruments, creating a unique genre that transcends customary musical classification. At the NJPAC performance, the ensemble’s program includes the world premiere of “Vojo,” composed by Cristina Pato and Kojiro Umezaki, as well as “Norma’s Secret,” “Taranta Project,” “Shristi,” “Silent City,” and “Air to Air” (from the Grammy-nominated album “Off the Map”).
The ensemble performing at NJPAC is comprised of artistic director Yo-Yo Ma on cello; Shanir Blumenkranz on contrabass; Nicholas Cords on viola; Sandeep Das on tabla; Hadi Eldebek on oud; Jonathan Gandelsman, on violin; Joseph Gramley on percussion; Colin Jacobsen on violin; Kayhan Kalhor on kamancheh; Cristina Pato on gaita (Galician bagpipes); Shane Shanahan on percussion; Mark Suter on percussion; and Kojiro Umezaki on shakuhachi.
New Jersey Performing Arts Center (NJPAC), located in downtown Newark, New Jersey, is the sixth largest performing arts center in the United States. As New Jersey’s Town Square, NJPAC brings diverse communities together, providing access to all and showcasing the State’s and the world’s best artists while acting as a leading catalyst in the revitalization of its home city. Through its extensive Arts Education programs, NJPAC is shaping the next generation of artists and arts enthusiasts. NJPAC has attracted over 6 million visitors (more than one million children) since opening its doors in 1997, and nurtures meaningful and lasting relationships with each of its constituents. Visit www.njpac.org for more information.
Programming has been made possible in part by funds from the New Jersey State Council on the Arts/Department of State, a Partner Agency of the National Endowment for the Arts, by funds from the National Endowment for the Arts, and by Discover Jersey Arts.
NJPAC is a wheelchair accessible facility and provides assistive services for patrons with disabilities. For more information, call 888-GO-NJPAC.
