Kayhan Kalhor & Ali Bahrami Fard
Bay Area - San Francisco Thursday - November 14, 2013 07:30 PM
A virtuoso of the Persian spiked fiddle called the kamancheh, Kayhan Kalhor is a three-time Grammy nominee widely considered to be the greatest living ambassador of Iranian music. Born into an Iranian Kurdish family, he’s performed internationally as a founding member of Yo-Yo Ma’s Silk Road Ensemble and given solo recitals at Carnegie Hall. Living back in Tehran after years in the West, Kalhor returns bearing the shah kaman, a new, custom-built kamancheh constructed with sympathetic strings, joining forces with Ali Bahrami Fard, a master of the rarely heard bass santour (a hammered dulcimer with 96 strings). They perform the deeply stirring music from 2012’s World Village release I Will Not Stand Alone, a stark and haunting meditation that finds glimmers of hope in dark times.
